Hillary's Picks

Hillary

Hillary (a.k.a. "Hillary 2," and "Other Hillary"), our Assistant Manager, graduated from Salem State College in December 2009 with a degree in English and Philosophy. After growing up in Ipswich, MA, she set out to see the world and settled in a brand new city: Beverly. In her spare time, Hillary enjoys making jokes at her own expense, buying typewriter key jewelry, cooking vegetarian food* and, of course, reading. She particularly enjoys dark humor, psychological thrillers and dystopian young adult fiction. Some of her favorite authors are David Sedaris, Jincy Willett, Richard Russo, Junot Diaz and Mary Roach.

Not your typical novel; it’s non-linear, has multiple narrators and narrative styles (including a chapter told entirely through a Power Point presentation), and you may at times be wondering what year you’re in. All the same, this was an incredibly fun read and Egan is certainly capable of pulling off the experiments she tries here. Fans of Junot Diaz in particular will really like her hip and insightful prose. Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, 2011.

Finch is a corporate drone whose life falls into ruin after he’s laid off from his job at an artificial plant company. After responding to a vague and mysterious job offer he receives in his SPAM email folder, he visits the home of Mr. Crane, an eccentric and enigmatic billionaire who makes him an offer he simply can’t refuse. So begins a dramatic change in all aspects of Finch’s lifestyle and personal philosophies. I don’t want to reveal more about the plot because part of what makes this book so wonderful is how the story unfolds. This is a strange novel and a thought-provoking allegory that would make a fantastic book club pick.

This book got stellar reviews and I think has completely lived up to its hype. It's fantastically eerie, moving, thought-provoking and well-written. Both a heart-pumping thriller and compelling mother-son story, Donoghue accomplishes a lot with this novel. I really think it's one of the year's must-reads and great choice for book clubs.

In his follow-up to “Gone, Baby, Gone” Lehane proves once again that he is the master of the ‘new noir.’ After a 12-year hiatus, Kenzie and Gennaro are again searching for the missing Amanda McCready, now 16 years old. It’s not necessary to have read “Gone, Baby, Gone” to really enjoy this mystery/thriller.

Sherlock Holmes meets Harriet the Spy in Flavia de Luce, the 11-year-old, poison-obsessed chemistry whiz who narrates these novels. Flavia exhibits stunning amateur detective skills, solving murder mysteries with her keen eye for detail. These books are light and fun, but still smart and witty, all much like Flavia herself. Great reads!

Sedaris makes a departure from his typical memoir/essay style with this book of anthropomorphic animal stories, but don’t be dissuaded by this! These stories are quirky, strange and hysterical. I especially liked “The Migrating Warblers” and “The Toad, the Turtle and the Duck.”

I am certainly not an aficionado of the genre, but I can’t argue with the Washington Post when they say that she is “America’s funniest science writer.” In her most recent exploration, Roach takes on all things space. She’s infinitely inquisitive, asking (and answering) all the questions you might not have considered with regard to space travel. Great for fans of Roach’s work, or as an introduction to an awesome writer.

This is the first of Gardner’s books that I’ve read and I was not disappointed! Detective D.D. Warren is a tough, hard detective with the Boston P.D. on a desperate search for answers after a Massachusetts state trooper appears to have killed her husband and kidnapped her 6-year-old daughter. Gardner has a great knack for creating several believable, interesting and complex characters, all with unique voices. Perfect for Dennis Lehane fans!

In a post-apocalyptic world, the United States has dissolved into 12 districts all ruled by the tyrannical and opulent Capitol. Every year, each district has to send two teenage tributes to compete in the Hunger Games, a televised, elaborate fight to the death. 16-year-old Katniss, the novel’s heroine, offers to take her 12-year-old sister’s place in the games and is thrust into a fight to stay alive that goes well beyond the limits of the Hunger Games arena. These smash-hit books are fast-paced, dramatic and compelling. For teens and adults alike; if you think you’re too old to get into a young adult trilogy, think again!

Fans of “The Hunger Games” may also enjoy this futuristic take on the post-apocalypse theme that borrows more from science fiction. Amy, along with her parents and approximately 100 others, has been cryogenically frozen aboard the spaceship Godspeed as it journeys for 300 years to find a new planet that can sustain human life. Without warning, someone unplugs her too early and leaves her for dead. As she attempts to adjust to a life that is vastly different from her life on Earth, she must also attempt to find out who tried to murder her. A great blend of science fiction, murder mystery and teen romance. Recommended for teens 13 and up.

If you missed taking Ethics 101 in college, this book can serve as your crash course. Sandel, who teaches government at Harvard, offers a basic survey of the major schools of ethical thought while exploring contemporary, hot-button topics as examples. No, I probably wouldn’t choose this as my next beach read, but Sandel presents this material in an accessible way that makes for an interesting and enjoyable read.

Don't be dissuaded by the lengthy, footnoted introduction -- this is a great novel. Oscar, the novel's unlikely hero, is a "disastrously overweight ghetto nerd" from New Jersey. He's a romantic with a lofty vocabulary, a major jones for science fiction, and a struggling, pitiful excuse for a social life. Diaz's narrator is witty, insightful, crude and hip. He describes, in what is often horrifying detail, 3 generations of the de Leon clan and their journey from Santo Domingo to New Jersey. One of my favorite elements of this novel is the uniquely-voiced and insightful chronicle of Dominican history that is infused with the tragic, heart-rending story of the de Leon family. Some Spanish language knowledge is helpful, but not required.

This book gave me a whole new perspective on the classic novel Jane Eyre, as well as Caribbean history. Have you ever wondered about Mr. Rochester's first wife, also known as "the mad woman upstairs"? Rhys's novel serves as a sort of prequel, exploring this character and how she came to eventually descend into madness. She is identified as the young, beautiful and fiery Antoinette Cosway, a far cry from her crazy-lady character in Bronte's original novel. I would recommend holding off until you've read and digested Jane Eyre. Moreover, a word of caution to those die-hard Bronte purists: you likely won't look at Jane or Rochester the same way after reading this one.

These stories are simply quirky and awesome. I picked this up because my all-time favorite author, David Sedaris, said it was hilarious. While I didn't necessarily find it to be as funny as I originally expected, Willett is dry, cutting and often insightful. Even though her characters are often a little off-the-wall, ultimately I think there is something universal about them. Many of these stories are powerful enough to stick with you for a long time.

I will, quite literally, read anything Sedaris has written, contributed to, or even merely recommended (see Jenny and the Jaws of Life) -- but this is my ultimate favorite. I read this book for the first time about 5 years ago not knowing at the time that it would kick off an overwhelming and, at times, unhealthy obsessive love affair. Sedaris' books are great to pick up and put down when you don't have time to read a whole novel from start to finish. His stories are so hilarious you'll be laughing out loud whether you're all alone at home or sitting in a coffee shop.

Two contemporary scholars discover a correspondence betweeen a pair of Victorian poets that suggests the two were more than casual acquaintances. This discovery also leads to more involved, personal mysteries for the two researchers who urgently attempt to unearth the whole truth. Another gem from one of my favorite genres: the literary mystery. Byatt's prose is gorgeous and her samplings of original Victorian-era poetry are fluidly intertwined with the rest of the novel.
