Oh, What a Character!
All the best stories in books, movies, and television have one thing in common: characters we care about. While you can’t have a story without a plot, viewers and readers won’t be invested in the action of the story unless they are invested in the character—love ’em or hate ’em, doesn’t matter, so long as we feel something for them. In this session, Lori will teach you the tricks that writers use to develop great characters with a distinct voice. As a group, we will create characters by “interviewing” them, coming up with their “wound and their want,” and following a writing prompt to drop them into a story.
Purchase Required: This workshop is "free" with the purchase of a hardcover copy of either one of Lori's books.
Lori Goldstein lives in Cambridge, MA, and is the author of Becoming Jinn (available now) and Circle of Jinn (releasing May 17, 2016), both from Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan. Lori was a journalist and copyeditor before embracing her love of fictional people. The Becoming Jinnseries is a modern spin on the tale of wish-granting genies and book one received a star from VOYA magazine, which named it one of the Best Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror of 2015, saying “this well-written title will not stay on the shelf.” Advance praise for Circle of Jinnfrom Booklist says, “Book two takes a sharp turn into high fantasy as Azra and her friends and family band together to stop the oppressive rule of the Afrit, the jinn ruling class. Romance and wish granting take a backseat to friendship, political intrigue, and Azra’s maturation and ongoing discovery of her heritage. Fans of the first book should be satisfied by this conclusion."
Azra has just turned sixteen, and overnight her body lengthens, her olive skin deepens, and her eyes glisten gold thanks to the brand-new silver bangle that locks around her wrist. As she always knew it would, her Jinn ancestry brings not just magical powers but the reality of a life of servitude, as her wish granting is controlled by a remote ruling class of Jinn known as the Afrit.
Being Jinn is Azra's new reality. As she grants wishes under the watchful eye of the Afrit council, she remains torn between her two worlds—human and Jinn. Soon secrets spill, and rumors of an uprising become real as the Afrit's reach extends beyond the underground world of Janna.
